What food is Stockholm known for?

Before diving into where to eat, it helps to understand what makes Swedish cuisine special. Stockholm’s food culture is deeply connected to nature, with a strong focus on seasonal ingredients, simple flavors, and traditional preparation methods like pickling, curing, and smoking. Some of the most famous foods you should try in Stockholm include: Swedish meatballs with lingonberries, Salmon, Pickled Herring, Cinnamon buns (kanelbullar) and much more.

Our favorite places to eat in Stockholm

Stockholm’s food scene is spread across different neighborhoods, each offering a slightly different vibe – from historic dining in Gamla Stan to trendy cafés in Södermalm. Here are some of the places we tried and loved:

DalaNisse (Vasastan)

Where the locals go: This is my favorite restaurant in Stockholm. We came here to try traditional Swedish Köttbullar with mashed potatoes. The dish was delicious! They also had good vegetarian options. The atmosphere feels very local, as there aren’t many tourists in this area called Vasastan, where we had our Airbnb.

Grändens Café (Gamla Stan)

Time for Fika: A nice little Café to take a break while walking around the old town. This cozy spot is exactly what you need for traditional Swedish Fika („Coffee Break“): A cup of coffee paired with the delicious traditional cinnamon roll. Yummy!

Slingerbulten (Gamla Stan)

Traditional cuisine: A good stop if you want to try Swedish food without it feeling too touristy. It’s located in Gamla Stan, so you kind of expect it to be, but it’s actually very high quality. Make sure to book a table ahead to avoid the queues , especially for dinner.

Pom & Flora (Vasastan)

THE Brunch spot: It’s a bit more on the trendy side, but in a good way. Everything looks good, tastes good, and it’s one of those places where you end up staying longer than planned.

Brunos korvbar (Östermalm)

A quick snack: Very simple, but worth it. If you’re in the mood for something quick, this is a good stop: the Swedish sausage is actually really delicious.

Is Stockholm expensive for food?

Compared to other European capitals, Stockholm is often perceived as an expensive city when it comes to dining out. However, based on our experience, prices were not as extreme as expected, especially when compared to destinations like Switzerland.

While food prices in Stockholm are generally higher than in countries like Germany, the difference is not as significant as many travelers assume. In fact, the overall value for money stood out positively throughout our trip. We could have a delicious full meal at around 20-25€ and a lunch snack for under 10€ which makes the prices comparable to Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Another small but noticeable detail is that many cafés offer free tap water, often infused with flavors like lime, which adds to the overall experience and helps keep additional costs low. Overall, while Stockholm is not a budget destination, it offers excellent quality for the price, making it a worthwhile food destination for travelers who appreciate good cuisine.
