Stockholm Food Guide – What we ate in the Swedish Capital

Stockholm is one of those cities that feels easy right away. It’s spread across multiple islands, but everything is well connected, so you end up walking a lot without really noticing. Between the old streets in Gamla Stan and areas like Södermalm, there’s a nice mix of historic and more modern spots.

While we visited most of the main sights, such as Gamla Stan or Södermalm we also just spent a lot of time walking around and taking it all in. On another day, we also took a ferry out to Fjäderholmarna, which I’d definitely recommend, especially in summer. We went in August, so the weather was really nice, and it was a good way to get a bit out of the city for a few hours.

I didn’t plan too much when it came to food, but we ended up finding some really good places along the way. These are the ones I’d actually recommend:

DalaNisse (Vasastan)

Where the locals go: This is my favorite restaurant in Stockholm. We came here to try traditional Swedish Köttbullar with mashed potatoes. The dish was delicious! They also had good vegetarian options. The atmosphere feels very local, as there aren’t many tourists in this area called Vasastan, where we had our Airbnb.

Grändens Café (Gamla Stan)

Time for Fika: A nice little Café to take a break while walking around the old town. This cozy spot is exactly what you need for traditional Swedish Fika („Coffee Break“): A cup of coffee paired with the delicious traditional cinnamon roll. Yummy!

Slingerbulten (Gamla Stan)

Traditional cuisine: A good stop if you want to try Swedish food without it feeling too touristy. It’s located in Gamla Stan, so you kind of expect it to be, but it’s actually very high quality. Make sure to book a table ahead to avoid the queues , especially for dinner.

Pom & Flora (Vasastan)

THE Brunch spot: It’s a bit more on the trendy side, but in a good way. Everything looks good, tastes good, and it’s one of those places where you end up staying longer than planned.

Brunos korvbar (Östermalm)

A quick snack: Very simple, but worth it. If you’re in the mood for something quick, this is a good stop: the Swedish sausage is actually really delicious.

Here you’ll find the overview of the mentioned places:

Happy eating!
